The Lost Towns Project is eponymously named for the lost colonial towns of Anne Arundel County that we are committed to finding, excavating, and educating about based upon our findings. Thus far, we have excavated at more than a dozen sites associated with three of the lost colonial towns. Click on the links below to explore sites associated with each town.

We have also expanded our exploration of towns to include the villages of prehistoric Native Americans. Pig Point is a prehistoric site that was inhabited for over 8,500 years, and included periods of extensive occupation.

Most of these sites are located on private land, and are only accessible to the public when we are actively excavating the sites during the weekdays. We ourselves are only allowed on the sites with the permission of the land owner. Due to the inaccessibility of the majority of our sites for the majority of our supporters, we will make these sites come alive virtually, with photo slideshows, site reports, maps, primary documents, and more. Some of the sites will even have a short video site tour.

Our first site tour is of our Archaeology Lab, located at Historic London Town and Gardens. Most of the work of archaeology occurs once we've left the site, and begin the long procedure of processing, curating, and analyzing the artifacts, which is critical to our understanding of the site. These artifacts help us determine when the site and its various components date to, use areas across the site, as well as the foodways, trade patterns, and level of wealth of the site's inhabitants.
